I've misconfigured Samba at some point in the past on my system, where
permissions allowed me to browse directories, but not open any files.
That could be an issue as well.

The edit limitations your seeing are not within the OS (Fedora) but
rather with SAMBA. I have never know samba to be able to edit remote
files directly. What you should be using is NFS, since the files reside
on a "nix" based server anyway why are you even using SAMBA over NFS?
There are 3 very basic simple steps to setup NFS and then the files
would mount seemlessly as though they are part of your local tree and
can be edited directly. If you need help setting up NFS, let me know.<br>
