Thanks, I'll keep it in mind. We'll see if I run into any issues with
the hard mounts. I've set it with no options at the moment we'll see
how it goes. We also run maildir.

We've been running with the 'soft' option for years, It was added
because the machine wouldn't shut down during a power outage before the
UPS died, hanging on unmouting drives. I think origionally my problem
was with courier still having file locks when the machine is going
down. A while back changed my shutdown script run by the UPS to
shutdown sendmail, courier imap, samba, autofs, then the nfs services,
then attempt an init 0. We'll see next time it gets shutdown how it
fares with the hard mounts. I don't think it will be a problem. Like
Darin said, I think it was a service not shutting down issue.

The only speed problems I had was with the 'noac' option. (which we've
also had for a while). I didn't think it was a huge performance problem
before, but I was running a Redhat 2.1ES server and client until last
week when the server was replaced with a Redhat 3ES box, (client still
2.1). I'm not sure if it's a protocol issue with the 'noac' causing the
performance drop.

With the 'noac' option the reads are quick, but a 38MB file write that
takes seconds without the option, takes 2 minutes. Without it both are
quick.

Thanks

Hi Justin,
I like to use "bg,intr" for these situations. Soft mounts can cause data
loss -- especially when using mbox files as they tend to stay open and may
loose integrity when the nfs handle goes stale and remaining data is not
committed. I've not had a problem with maildir's (they are just one small
file).
BTw, if you are having transfer speed problems, take a look at the rsize and
wsize options in the nfs mount command.
Good luck!

Thanks for the link, what's the generally preferred method?
'hard,intr'?
