Tucking tail and submitting to the dark lord in Redmond would be
unwise.
In the end you will have to learn Linux anyway when you simply can't
take corporate control of your computing any longer. Listen to
Stallman: putting your data into a proprietary system is like putting
your neck into a noose. Expecting things to work the first (or second,
or third) time, however, is dangerously optimistic.

Simply start over when things become totally unusable

I have built and fried more Linux systems of various flavors here than
I can count. All trying to do some simple thing that seemed like a
really good idea the moment before I lost control of the desktop or the
soundcard or X or whatever.

I gave up on up2date ages ago, since I have never been able to make it
work on numerous redhat installs. Every reinstall, it seems, makes me
discover some new capability of whatever flavor of Linux that I had not
yet discovered, so that's always fun.

There are many flavors to choose from, some easier to deal with than
others.
You should taste at least a few before admitting defeat.
Or just keep reinstalling that one until it works the way you want it
to.

The Linux gods only want one thing from you: STUDY.

imho, anyway.
tried using redhat-menus0 through synaptic and have enraged the Linux
gods. I am now condemned to X-Win and do not know how to run it very
well. I was able to get the gnome-panel running and figured I could use
the desktop switcher to bring back the desktop but the only choices
were XFce or TWN. ( I was hoping for gnome or KDE)

The other thing is I can only log in as root. It seems like my normal
login that I use is gone.

Should I tuck my tail and run back to Winbloze?
