I want to be able to do a make xconfig to bring up the kernel config gui. It wont let me becasue I have to be in the /usr/src/linux 2.4 dir. The Linux dirs dont show and the make xconfig dosent work.

You just need to verify that the rpm revision numbers match between the
kernel & the kernel source rpm.  If they don't, the rpm won't let you
install it anyways unless you specifically add --force to the rpm command.

But if you're still using the stock kernel, then you should have no
issues.
